Building a Safe Nursery for Your Newborn - Low Emissions and More

A Blog Post by Dr. Christine Langer

Nursery safety is a big topic on top of every parent's mind. Parents spent hours researching into the best nursery product for their newborn. After all, it's the safety of your baby! As you're choosing the theme, paint colors, and eco-friendly décor for your baby's nursery, it's important to keep nursery safety top of mind.

Nursery Safety Tips - Creating a Low Emissions Environment

What is Wireless Emissions?

Radiofrequency (RF) energy is a type of electromagnetic radiation. It is used to transmit signals carrying information in the form of radio waves. Radio waves are broadcast using a transmitter. For example, when you talk on a cell phone, your cell phone acts as a transmitter and your voice is carried on radio waves to the person you are calling. Their phone acts as the receiver and converts the signal back into your voice. In addition to cell phones, other wireless devices such as radios, Wi-Fi routers, satellites, pacemakers and your baby monitor can send or receive RF energy waves.

Why Does Wireless Emissions Matter in Your Nursery

Parents should exercise the highest level of caution when it comes to baby safety. A young child is more susceptible to the effects of wireless emissions.

Depending on where you look, there are scientific studies that have linked exposure to EMF with the development of cancer. Furthermore, there are scientific studies that indicated correlation between exposure to EMF and learning disabilities such as ADHD. Nevertheless, it is a controversial subject with stake holders making arguments on both sides.

5 Tips to Building a Safe Nursery (That's Low Emissions)

 (1) Use a Bebcare ultra-low emissions baby monitor. Bebcare baby monitors utilize DSR Digital Safe Radio technology, which reduces the level of wireless emissions by the monitor. When compared to a typical DECT baby monitor, the level of emissions can be 95% lower.

 (2) Turn off high power wireless devices such as WiFi router at night. WiFi routers are relatively high power devices. The simple step of hitting the off switch can lead to a better night’s sleep. When on, a WiFi signal may interfere with our brains during sleep, so by turning it off we reduce EMF exposure and hopefully rest more deeply.

 (3) Create a safe sleep space. As a precaution against SIDS, there should only be two things in your baby's crib: a firm, tight-fitting mattress and a crib sheet. You can also take a look at Bebcare Baby Sensor Mat that can sense the baby's movement. Mirrors or picture frames can seriously injure your baby if they fell. Avoid decorations with long strings, ribbons, or anything else that could pose a strangulation hazard.

 (4) Use furniture wall anchors. Bring out the drill to install a screw-mounted device into the wall to attach to book cases, dressers, and the changing table. Don't leave anything swaying.

 (5) Hang the crib mobile correctly. Because string can be a strangulation hazard, never use it to hang anything on or near where your baby sleeps, including a crib mobile. If you plan on hanging a mobile from the ceiling, be sure to use a hanger to affix the mobile at a height your baby can't reach.
